Verbascum thapsus, the great mullein, greater mullein or common mullein. A hairy, biennial plant that can grow up to 10 feet tall or more. It has small, yellow flowers that are densely grouped on a tall stem which grows from a large rosette of leaves the first year. The leaves are large, up to 19.5 inches long, the smaller leaves are quite soft and has been known as “cowboy toilet paper”.

The flowers are produced the second year after planting. Flowering lasts up to three months from early to late summer (June to August) with flowering starting at the bottom of the spike and progressing irregularly upward.

This plant has been used to make dyes and torches.
